003 - Failure to Sleep

200708_01_01 - Bamboo

Picture: Above my stereo, I have a bamboo shoot growing in an ancient candle holder, with rocks that used to go in my aquarium - back when I had fish. The blue? a spoon from gelato. The black? Finger Eleven guitar pic.

An odd thing happened today - my body refused free sleep. I tried for two hours this afternoon to nap for an hour, and failed miserably. I think I slept got about five minutes, during which time I had an intense, but forgotten, dream. There was just too much noise, too much warmth, and the sounds of my cousin messaging me through msn. Had it worked, I was going to bike about a bit, but I just didn't have the energy to get very far.

Last night I was fortunate enough to watch, among other things, a Japanese movie called Returner:

This one is a very interesting time travel piece about preventing war with an alien species. I hate talking about movies because it's hard to say anything at all without giving too much away, but this one has its fair share of cool action and gadgets and the like. You really get attached to the characters, both good and bad. Mizoguchi, the main bad guy, and Miyamoto, the main good guy, have some really great moments together. I'm not well versed in the effects of time travel (thank Rick Berman and Brannon Braga) , but what really blew me away (again, not wanting to give too much away) was how some things happened in the movie's present before they happened in the movie's future. It was subtle here, but much appreciated. More time travel pieces need to really delve into and take advantage of stuff like that.

Of course it was in Japanese with English subtitles; dubbing would have been terrible. I love how when people speak Japanese in movies and the like, it sounds like they're speaking with conviction. It's worth checking out if you're looking for an action, lighthearted sci-fi kinda movie.
